Washington Governor Suspends State Laws to Speed Wildfire Recovery in Seven Counties

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed an emergency proclamation on August 10, 2026 temporarily suspending numerous state laws to speed wildfire recovery across seven counties and three tribal nations, according to the Bellevue Reporter.

“My administration is laser-focused on assisting Washingtonians who have lost so much. My emergency proclamation waives and suspends numerous state laws so that help can move quickly,” Ferguson said.

For individuals, the proclamation eliminates charges for replacement documents, extends professional license renewal deadlines, makes all uninsured homeowners eligible for state assistance regardless of income, extends the Family Emergency Assistance Program to families without children, suspends the one-week waiting period for unemployment benefits, waives job-search requirements, prohibits eviction-related actions for two weeks, and prevents eviction for hosting displaced persons.

For businesses, it suspends truck driver hour restrictions and waives late tax filing fees. It also temporarily suspends regulatory requirements for health care facilities.

The counties covered are Chelan, Ferry, Okanogan, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas and Yakima, plus three tribal nations.
