Elanco completed a 25,000-square-foot expansion of its biologics manufacturing site in Elwood, Kansas, on August 26, 2026. The $120 million project increased the facility's production capacity more than fourfold, according to Elanco's expansion announcement. Biologics are treatments produced through biological processes. At Elwood, the term covers monoclonal-antibody products for dogs.

What the expansion added
Elanco installed equipment for upstream and downstream monoclonal-antibody processing. Together, those operations support the production and purification stages needed to manufacture the products.
The project also added a pilot plant, quality-control laboratory and support space. The pilot plant can develop manufacturing processes and produce material for clinical testing, so the investment expands development work as well as commercial production.
Which products are made in Elwood
The facility currently manufactures Befrena, or tirnovetmab, for allergic and atopic dermatitis in dogs. USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service records identify Befrena as Elanco's licensed canine tirnovetmab product and list interleukin-31 as its agent in the agency's product record.
Elwood also makes Trutect, a canine parvovirus product. USDA APHIS identifies its product true name as anivovetmab in a separate veterinary biologics record.

What this means for product availability
More factory capacity does not mean supply becomes unlimited immediately. Elanco said Befrena demand was running at twice its expectations and projected that supply would reach unconstrained levels in early 2027.
That timeline is a company forecast, not a guarantee of availability at every veterinary clinic. Dog owners considering the treatment should confirm current access with their veterinarian instead of relying on the factory announcement alone.
Completed spending and remaining risks
The completed expansion accounts for $120 million of Elanco's investment at Elwood. The company plans another $30 million for warehousing through 2028, which would raise the site's total investment to $150 million; that additional spending has not yet been completed.
Commercial results also remain uncertain. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Elanco warned that capacity projects may require regulatory approvals and can face delays, cost overruns and demand risk.
